Part of a long family line of doctors dating back from the 19th century, at his 59 years of age Dr. Manuel Ribas is currently a highly worldwide renowned orthopaedic surgeon.
Dr. Manuel Ribas is a specialist for Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, and since 2005 Head of the Hip Unit, University Hospital Dexeus (Grupo Quirónsalud) , Barcelona, Spain. Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon.
After obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona (Hospital Cílinic) in 1982, he made his speciality formation in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at the Dexeus University Hospital of Barcelona (Autonomous University of Barcelona) from 1983 to 1987.
On May 6th 1986, in his last year of residency, he launched the first Bone Bank in Barcelona and performed the first allogenic bone transplantation in hip revision. Since then, more than 2000 allografting procedures have been performed in his institution under the different Sub- specialized Units at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, one of the most experienced and recognized in numbers in whole Spain.
In November 2000, he performed the first procurement and preparation in Spain of a Meniscal Transplant from a cadaveric donor. Working alongside Prof. Dr. Jose Maria Villarubias and Dr. Josep Tuneu he transplanted the first meniscus allograft. In 2008 he performed the first to date recognized labrum transplantation in a hip.
Together with Professor Villarubias, 2003 he was a pioneer in hip resurfacing in young adults in Spain. Today, he is one of the most experienced surgeons in this field in the country with more than 1500 cases. He has participated in more than 300 scientific conferences around the world and contributed over 50 medical publications, notably in Spain and Latin America. He has received a range of awards in the field of Traumatology, Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine (EFORT, EHS, AAOS and FEMEDE). He is also involved in multicentric hip implant designs and developments.
He has participated in over 300 scientific conferences around the world and over 200 medical publications. He has received a range of awards in the field of Traumatology, Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Europe and America.
He is member of different scientific associations in Spain, Europe and America. Under his patients are renowned top-level elite athletes from Spain and Europe.

RESIDENCY
“Departamento del Aparato Locomotor y Medicina del Deporte” (Department for Orthopaedic Surgery, Traumatology and Sportsmedicine), Dexeus University Institute of Barcelona (Prof. Dr. José María Vilarrubias Guillamet ) from November 1982 to 1987. During this period he performed different publications, oral presentations in congresses of the specialty in Spain and in Europe (see anexed chapter).
In the same way, after his stay at the Universitätsklinik Ulm (Germany) he created the first Bone Bank in Barcelona in May 1986 at the Dexeus University Institute of Barcelona. He is currently still the Medical Director of the Bank for Musculoskeletal Tissues. Up to date more than 1400 allografting procedures have been performed in this Institution.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY
Consultant initially for Hip and Knee Surgery at the “Departamento del Aparato Locomotor y Medicina del Deporte” (Department for Orthopaedic Surgery, Traumatology and Sportsmedicine), University Hospital Dexeus of Barcelona from 1988 up to now.
His daily task focuses usualy on:
In the same way he is , from its creation, currently still the Medical Director of the Bank for Musculoskeletal Tisúes at the Dexeus University Institute of Barcelona.

He has stayed in different Medicals Centers in Europe and in USA, which will be mentioned later.
He has performed different Works, Publications , Ponencies, Oral communications, that will be included in following chapters . On the other hand he has participated in different books of the specialty.
He is official member of the Medical Staff of Dexeus University Institute of Barcelona. During the course 1999 – 2000 was in charge to lead additionally the Medical Secretary of its whole institution.
From 1996 he belonged to the Board of the European Association of Musculoskeletal Transplantation. He participated in the actualization and publication of the Common Standards of the European Association of Musculoskeletal Transplantation – EAMST (direct branch of EFORT for this subject) and the European Association of Tissue Banks – EATB.
Since 2000 –2001 he is Director of Medical Services of Egara Hockey Club ( two times european Champion ). For medical information to trainers, players and related persons he organizes the unique course in Spain focused on pathology in fieldhockey players (“Curs sobre lesions en l’Hoquei”), supported by the International University of Catalonia (UIC).
From September 1st to 13th 2003 he leaded the task of Medical Director of the Medical Services at the Official Fielhockey’s Men and Women European Nations Cup held in Barcelona, also Preolympic Tournament.
In 2003 , after his stay with Prof. Dr. Robert Trousdale and Dr. Miguel Cabanela at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN de los EEUU de Norteamérica, where he learned the Ganz’s femoroacetabular chondro-osteoplasty for femoroacetabular impingement , he developed from cadaveric dissections a new lesser and minimal invasive anterior femoroacetabular chondro-osteoplasty, that avoids throcanter osteotomy and hip dislocation. In this way the recovery and resume to leisure activities of the patients, mainly sportsmen, take much less time. This technique was presented outside from Spain in the Berner Symposium “New concepts in Hip surgery “ in honour to Prof. Dr.
He is participating in charge of designer in a multicentric European development of a new anatomical non-cemented modular hip endoprosthesis, to be named “Profemur- Anatomical” (WMT , now MictoPort ).

DR. CARLOMAGNO CARDENAS
Dr. Cardenas provides state-of-the-art hip surgery in Barcelona – Spain; he is an experienced hip arthroscopist and open hip preservation surgeon in Europe, performing hundreds of procedures annually.
He helped develop the direct mini-anterior approach for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement of the hip and transitioned in 2010, to full hip arthroscopy.
Other mini-invasive techniques he used include the transartorial periacetabular osteotomy to correct hip dysplasia in its early stages, surgical hip dislocation for complex deformity, and femoral osteotomies.
Together with other leading surgeons in Europe and the United States, he developed the latest portfolio of hip access instruments and implants for hip arthroscopy, used worldwide.
In the past eight years, he has collaborated with the world leader in 3D simulation analysis software to improve hip impingement detection and osteotomy planning.
He is a pioneer in innovative approaches to the hip joint. He is frequently involved in education and anatomic labs on soft tissue preserving hip surgery, which allows faster recovery after joint replacement procedures.
Dr. Cárdenas is a member of several scientific medical societies (ISHA, ESKKA, AEA), and remains very active, teaching more than 50 conferences annually. He hosts a surgical observation program for surgeons from all around the world.
